Viewers Digression: Paranormal movie.
I do not know what I was thinking buying a ticket to see movie, normally I don't do paranormal. Paranormal are movies on metaphysics, metaphysics= spirits and magic. As a good Christian girl, I'm sorry it doesn't seat well with me. So from title, snake girl is a giveaway, seeing Nneka, red flag but the hype on social media was tempting. First the movie flier I saw had a village setting or was that my imagination, ooh now I know, the 30years ago backtrack. I'm a sucker for movies set in the 90s and backwards. There is something original about those movies, that a playwright can recreate those scene, actually wins for effort. No one spends that much on costume and stage to release rubbish.
On rubbish, Nneka storyline just suck. If there is a parts 2, No am not watching!
The movie started with lot of promise, but in between the serial killing, the writer lost it. For acting, all crew were perfect to the T. Especially Ada played by Bimbo Ademoye, truth be told immediately her character died, the movie lost focus.
First you need to know the 2020 movie is a remake of 1992 Nollywood classic Nneka The Pretty Serpent. The original story focused on a mystical character that embarks on a mission to destroy unfaithful marriages, a powerful marine spirit sent to earth with a mission to lure the souls of men to the marine kingdom.
2020 we are talking about revenge, Nneka hell bent on killing the perpetrators of her parents death. And this mythical character using her body as a vessel, while at the same time Nneka is a pun in her whole charade to rule the kingdom unrivaled.
The movie started as a mystery and ended leaving us more confused. Exactly total waste of time; expecting us to watch out for a next part in this time and age 2021. This people no rate us.
To the fun part, Nneka is fierce, the way she kills her victims is fun not creepy, so no this is not a horror affair. The alacrity and callousness in which she took out Bovi the inspector, is one of my best scenes. Ada is chatty, it's a wonder she spoke Ibo naturally. Conversations in Ibo makes the movie more original. Like I said acting was just perfect.
We have action, you know how I said I hate mystics. I fear the incantations worst, surprising Nneka isn't killing by some sort of mystic power, she wrestles her victims. This is new and weird because most of them are male. Please wetin concern voodoo with upper cut, Nollywood biko choose a game plan, a so called serpent girl needn't wrestle shiit. But thank you for sparing me on the spirits language, our serpent girl easily hypnotized, she need not even open her hypnotic green eyes wide as per old Nollywood gimmicks.
Maybe the reason I was curious to see movie is to understand how the marine world operate, I'm always fascinated by stories, this movie account cannot be far from the truth. Many possessed in quest for power, while being used as puns for a bigger cause. Like this is the only highlight in the movie, Nneka the pretty serpent. Or if you later disobey the queen mother, you meet some calamity in your business, this is also true.
I expected more and got less. In a bid for continuity, the writer sacrificed content. If a fiercer queen mother feels threatened by Nneka, what power could she need from Ramsey. In the first instance why is the queen of a marine kingdom just interested in running a coffee shop, isn't their only job to wreck havoc and lure men, women for their cause. I tire for writer, pick a hustle. Marine spirits is beauty and allure mehn! and Nneka was faithful to only one men.
PS: I slept in between this movie in frigging AC-ed theater, the serial killing was totally boring, we all know her victims were all going down, and nothing new popped up. But movie will win anywhere for acting, thank you.
This is not a movie summary,
I don't appreciate spoiler alerts myself. And I am not your typical movie critic because this review is according to my movie taste slash preferences and just enough hype to advise your next movie. I am not a preacher of spoiler alert
, thank you.
